Franklin County Chancery Court is in the 12th Judicial District which consists of six counties: Franklin, Bledsoe, Grundy, Marion, Rhea and Sequatchie. Melissa Thomas Willis is the Chancellor presiding over our Judicial District.
Chancery Court is a Court of equity, having concurrent jurisdiction with Circuit Court in actions such as divorces and other civil cases, excluding unliquidated damages. Jury trials are not a common occurrence in Chancery Court, but are conducted when demanded.
Chancery Court also collects delinquent property taxes. After all legal requirements are met, we will then conduct a Tax Sale, selling all properties with unpaid delinquent taxes.
July 1, 2014, Probate Court will be transferred from General Sessions Court to Chancery Court. We will be in the learning process for several weeks, but will strive to provide the same efficient and courteous service you have become accustomed to from the staff in Mr. Baggett’s office. See more details about some changes under the PROBATE COURT page.
The Clerk and Master and Deputy Clerks in Chancery Court strive to assist the legal community and the general public in an efficient, courteous, and timely manner. By law Clerks are not permitted to give legal advice, but will do their best to generally explain the Court process and procedures.
